There’s no two ways about it – blogging boosts your profile online – but just what is the best way to blog? How do you do it, people often ask me? What’s it all about? How do you find the time/topics and so on and so on.
Having blogged once a week for over two years now on my creative writing blog, I wondered myself how I might find the time to fit in yet another one alongside running my business. I started off thinking that my creative writing blog would serve the purpose and then I realised that no, I should do what I do for other businesses and blog about what I do for a living!
My short stories and poetry are another side of my writing life, but copywriting for websites, business blogs and other outlets is the day job, so sharing my knowledge and experiences in these areas is key.
We all have to juggle work responsibilities, but it’s important to see blogging as one of these responsibilities. Quite simply, as one of my new business contacts, David McKechnie aka The Business Therapist, told me recently: you just gotta put it in your diary!
Here, then are some of my tips for blogging:
– Do it at the same time every week
– Plan ahead the topics you want to focus on (perhaps a content management calendar?)
– Use online research/articles for inspiration
– Interview specialists in your field (outside your own business) to give your readers fresh insight and something a little bit different
– Break up the text with pictures and bullet points
– Remember: people like lists
– Share it on social media
These are just a few tips for starters. Blogging takes a while to get used to, but once you begin, trust me – you won’t regret it.
