Web writing: Dos and don’ts

twitterI recently took part in a Twitter business hour (#nistartupshour), which dedicated an evening to giving tips and advice on websites. There were a lot of questions about a lot of things, including SEO content and blogging, so I’ve decided to do a brief post on a few dos and don’ts when it comes to web writing. Hopefully, some of you will find this helpful!

Do…quote

– Post regularly (fresh content keeps your site visible)

– Work in key words and phrases relating to your business in the content, as well as loosely related words to aid those search engines

– Write clearly and succinctly (would you want to read what you’ve written if you found it online?)

– Use informative/interesting content

– Use headlines/headings with key words

– Break the text up with images/infographics/sound bites etc. etc.

clock-474128_1280– Know your audience, and write accordingly

 – Realise that it takes a certain amount of time to get it right

– EDIT!!!

Don’t…

– Write dull or copied contentseo

– Over-stuff the text with key words or phrases (Google won’t like you for it)

– Write content full of business jargon that no-one understands

– Ignore your target customer base

crowd-sourcing-154759_1280– Over-post (yes, it does happen, and it can get really annoying…)

– Rush and forget to edit…

– Assume people know you and your business (they don’t)

These are just a few little tips for writing online content. More will follow I’m sure, but that’s enough to get you thinking. And if you need any help on the copywriting front, just let me know!
